Twenty years ago, on may 11, 1998 India conducted landmark Pokhran II nuclear test at Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district. A series of 5 nuclear explosions were conducted between may 11 and may 13, 1998. Pokhran Nuclear Test made India superpower and a nuclear country.
Why India Did Pokhran Nuclear Test 1998
India did this atomic test to become a superpower. As India was excluded from the list of superpowers. The neighbors China and Pakistan were already on the track of Nuclear might. So India decided to show their Nuclear Power to the whole world.
DR. APJ Abdul Kalam first thought about this Pokhran Nuclear Test. He discussed with the Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee about strengthing military forces and atomic power.
The First Meeting of Pokhran Nuclear Test
On 20th March 1998, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had an intense meeting. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam questioned about the atomic power and asked for the permission for the test.
It was a huge risk to conduct an Atomic test for any country and no one thought India will take this risk. But after the meeting, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee showed full trust on APJ Abdul Kalam and given permission to go ahead and test.
India Was Under The Radar Of CIA (Central Intelligence Agency)
The United States Of America got a clue of this and tightened its security. It’s Central
Intelligence Agency (CIA) put up a satellite in space to track all the activities of India.
The USA also was tracking everything happening at the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) which is the R&D center of Indian Military. All the telephonic conversation at DRDO were trapped and decoded by the USA intelligence.
How India Fooled US and CIA
Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam came out with the smart solution to restrict the tracking of CIA. Under his guidance, Scientist at DRDO did not use any terms that were associated with an atom bomb. Codewords like Tajmahal, Kumbhkaran, Sierra, Whitehouse where used instead.
The DRDO scientist would wear Army uniform so that CIA could not understand the plan. To make this success only fit scientist were included so that they can gel up with the physically fit soldiers.
To avoid satellite detection scientists carefully examined the timing of satellite positions over India. So the scientists worked in the dark of night when the chances of detection were very low.
